How many photovoltaic (PV) solar panels would be needed on your own building to generate a sufficient amount of electrical energy to make the whole endeavor worthwhile? Will going solar help slash your costs further down? And most importantly, is it worth your while?
First of all, here are the basic things you need to consider
There are various online resources – such as solar calculators and quote tools – that can help you to answer the above questions for yourself. However, they can be pretty intimidating if you aren’t a technologist, so here are some simple guidelines to translate everything into plain English.
The average American home consumes electricity at a rate of about 1 kW per hour (kWh), so let’s use that as a starting point. On the basis of there being approximately 730 hours in each month and a single kWh of electricity being priced at $0.10 on average, the typical monthly bill for an American household is around $73 for 730 kWh of electricity.
But of course, as soon as you start throwing in such non-standard items as hot tubs and electrical appliances that run continuously, there’s a lot of scope for that baseline price to balloon. Having plasma screen TVs, video games consoles and computers on all the time can make a drastic difference to your energy usage levels and what you ultimately pay. Remember that you may be making heavy use of an air conditioning unit during certain months as well.
Oh, and there’s another factor to consider: electricity doesn’t cost the same across the United States. Residents in West Virginia, for instance, can find themselves paying as little as $0.07/kWh, while those living in Hawaii may be charged up to $0.24/kWh.
It all means that the guidelines we provide in this article need to be approached with considerable caution, allowing for your own local and household circumstances.
How many solar panels are you likely to need?
A solar panel can generally be expected to produce about 10 watts per square foot, equating to a panel conversion efficiency of around 12%. This means you’ll need approximately 100 square feet of solar panels for every kW you generate.
Now, if the sun shone on a 24-hours-a-day basis, you could install 100 sq ft of solar panels and would already be generating sufficient energy to power the average U.S. home. While there are online resources out there that can assist you in figuring out how many hours of sunlight you can expect in your own neighborhood on average each day, there are nonetheless some rough guidelines you can follow. Such areas as Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Chicago often only see about three hours of sunlight a day, whereas states like California and Colorado are more accustomed to around five or six hours, and you might get as many as seven hours of sunshine in Arizona.
This can make quite a big difference to the size of the panel array you’ll need. 400 sq. ft. of panels delivering around 4 kW may suffice, or you might want to go for an 800 sq. ft. panel array giving you about 8 kW. The less sunshine you get in your area each day, the more solar panels you’ll require, whereas if you already receive a lot of sunshine in your locality, you can lower the panel count.
So, what real difference is likely to be made to your bills?
