What Are Cable TV Bundles?

Bundling is an option offered by many service providers that enables you to combine multiple services into a single bill. But not all bundles are the same – while they often combine phone service, Internet service and TV service, some packages include just two of these three services.

Service providers introduced bundling in part to encourage customers to purchase all three services by effectively giving them a discount on all of them, compared to if such services were bought separately. A bundle may also encourage a customer to remain with a single service provider for all of these services.

Almost any major phone, Internet and TV provider will offer one or more bundle deals. However, it’s not always as good a way to save money as may initially seem, given the tendency for some service providers to set extremely low starting prices, before later drastically raising prices.

Various comparison services exist online that enable you to check whether certain Internet & TV bundles really will save you money compared to other bundles or buying the relevant services individually.

What Are The Different Types Of Bundling Available?

There are various forms of bundle deals from which you may choose – but which one will really save you money? Below, we take a closer look at triple-play, double-play, and other bundle options.

Triple play bundle deals

A triple play bundle combines Internet, phone, and TV in one bill. Such a bundled service is usually purchased through a cable or phone company, although it can also be bought through a satellite TV provider in some instances.

If you know that you definitely want TV, Internet and phone service in your home, triple play bundling can be a great option, particularly given how expensive these services can be when bought individually.

By paying for phone, TV, and Internet services from a single provider via the bundle route, you may be able to significantly slash the cost of the all-round package.

Double play bundle deals

As its name suggests, a double-play bundle differs from a triple-play one in that only two of the aforementioned three services are included.

By picking the two of the three services that you actually need for your bundle, you aren’t forced to pay for a service that you don’t want or need. All the while, though, you may still be saving a significant amount of money compared to if you had simply bought those two services separately.

Internet & TV bundles, phone & Internet bundles, and phone & TV bundles are all examples of double-play bundles.

Bundling with traditional phone services

There are several ways you can bundle with traditional telephone service providers.

You may, for example, use a telephone firm alongside a TV company – such as DIRECTV or the DISH – that does not offer a phone service. Such a bundle basically involves paying two companies through a single bill. You choose a TV plan from a TV service provider, before bundling it with a telephone company’s Internet and/or phone plan.

There may not be a brilliant amount of choice, however, with regard to the carrier that you can opt to have bundled with your TV service. There may be certain carriers for which service is unavailable in your area. However, it’s also true that TV companies typically join forces with multiple different telecoms, so there should be at least one service that you can take advantage of in your locality.

Another option is to use your phone carrier for all of your services, given that even TV services are now available from some major carriers. Verizon, for instance, offers Verizon Fios TV, while fans of AT&T may wish to investigate U-verse TV. There are some very affordable triple play bundle deals available through both U-verse and Fios.

A clear advantage of taking this latter route is that you will only have to deal with a single company, instead of two. Unfortunately, though, you don’t have the option of using satellite TV service if you do choose Fios or U-verse, which both instead use fiber optic cables. These cables prevent you from obtaining a satellite service – which can frequently be cheaper – even if you wish to do so, and nor might the fiber optic TV service be available if you live in a remote area.

Bundling With Cable Companies

Cable firms aren’t restricted to TV service in what they offer – the fact that they also provide phone and Internet services means you won’t ever see them advertising a bundle deal in conjunction with another company. It may be that these represent the most attractive bundles from a price point of view.

It’s more likely, though, to be a traditional telephone company that offers you the most competitively priced bundle deal. You may be paying as little as $65 a month when you purchase a bundle with Verizon and DIRECTV, for instance. The DIRECTV Choice Extra plan gives you more than 205 channels from which to choose, along with high-speed Internet and unlimited local and regional calling.

Should You Bundle Or Not?

There are various pros and cons associated with telephone, Internet & TV bundles, and it is important to consider your likely level of use of the different services within whatever bundle deal you purchase.

While bundling isn’t always guaranteed to reduce your costs compared to if you had bought these services separately, they nonetheless give you another option for gaining access to such services in a way that reduces your bottom-line price while also serving your practical requirements.

Various online portals exist that make it easy for you to compare bundle deals by doing little more than entering your ZIP code and perusing the various available packages, also filtering on the basis of whether you want TV service, Internet service, phone service or a combination of these. Good luck!
